The problem with not using bed bug mattress covers is the fact that bed bugs will plant eggs in your mattress, and generally stay in them. Eggs can live for about 2 weeks after the parents and colony has died. So if you can spray a few times afterwards, maybe twice a week for even a month, you should be fine. Just make sure to keep your sheets clean, keep your eyes open, and check your body for marks to make sure they don’t come back.
