Heat Treatment For Bed Bugs – Does It Work?

There have been many stories about using heat treatment to kill bed bugs. This got us to wondering, does it really work? We set out to find if using some sort of bed bug heater would actually kill bed bugs – or if it’s another old-wives tale.

Bed Bug Heat Treatment – It Works!

Turns out that heating things that have been exposed to bed bugs to a temperature of 120 degrees or higher WILL kill bed bugs. However, this is all great for clothes and bedding – you can just throw them in the dryer for 30 minutes or more.

But what about belongings that exterminators CAN’T treat….like suitcases and books and other common home contents?

But what about purses and shoes and computers and all those OTHER things that can get infested with bed bugs? What if you’re moving from a bed bug infested apartment into a new home – how can you make sure that ALL your belongings are bed bug-free?

What if you’ve been traveling or away at college – how can you be sure that you don’t bring those creepy bed bugs back home with you?

We found a GREAT product that appears to work really well. It’s called the PackTite Portable Bed Bug Heater and it’s getting great reviews and feedback. Heck, one guy put his COMPUTER in it to be sure he didn’t bring the bed bugs in his apartment with him to his new home when he moved…. and it WORKED!

One PackTite bed bug heater owner said this:

“This product works great. It is very well made and kills the bed bugs effectively. I bought it directly from PackTite and it came with a digital thermometer to monitor the inside temperature and it gets hot enough to kill bed bugs in all life stages (~120F). I would recommend it! It is a much better way to assure there are no bugs on clothes and expensive bedding than to wash/dry very hot, which can damage your clothes and you are able to put in items that you wouldn’t want to put in the dryer like shoes, purses and books.”

Bed bugs can be very difficult to spot because they’re tiny, brown and flat (click here to see pictures of bed bugs bites). They’re very sneaky too that they bite you when you’re sleeping. If you can’t find an actual bug in your mattress, headboard and along the bed frame, look for some signs of their presence by spotting some bug droppings that look like small brown spots. Their eggs and larvae on the other hand look like white spots. Bed bug bites are very itchy and annoying and what better way to preventing them is by making use of bed bugs repellent to help get rid of bed bugs.

If you hate the thought of sniffing bed bug chemicals then you can make natural bed bugs repellent right at the comfort of your own home. You need something that you can spray to keep bugs away from you and your beddings.

How To Make a Natural Bed Bug Repellent

You will need the following ingredients:

1 cup of water
10 drops of lavender essential oil
10 drops rosemary essential oil
10 drops eucalyptus oil
Fine mist spray bottle

All you have to do is combine everything together and pour in a fine mist spray bottle. Make sure you shake it well so that every ingredient is incorporated well with the rest of the ingredients.

If you travel a lot and you’re worried about these nasty pests sticking to your clothes when you hang them in hotel closets, you can carry bed bugs repellent sachets with you. Go to your local herbs store and purchase dried eucalyptus leaves, dried rosemary leaves, dried lavender buds and large cloves. Put the leaves in small sachets and you can put them in your suitcase and in the pockets of your hanging garments or in any folded clothes you want to put in hotel room drawers. The aroma and smell of the leaves will keep them at bay. You can also tuck some sachets in the mattress.

It’s bad enough to have to deal with getting rid of bed bugs but having them in your bed can be so much worse. Every homeowner has dealt with bed bugs at least once in his life. As soon as we find out that our bed serves a home for bugs, of course we would want to get rid of them at the soonest possible time. One of the most common methods in getting rid of these nasty creatures is by using bed bugs sprays. I’m pretty sure that my concern is also your concern, how effective are these sprays in getting rid of the bugs?

Yes bed bugs sprays can be very effective but only up to a certain extent only. You can use a spray when you first discover the presence of bugs and keep in mind that the products that are approved for home use cannot handle extreme influx. If you’re only dealing with a minor problem then go ahead and purchase a spray for bed bugs. Make sure that you read the instructions carefully especially the part where it says whether you can spray it on bedding or any surfaces that you will have a direct contact with or not.

Lucky for us because most of the bed bugs sprays that are being sold in the market today are 100% non-toxic. It’s important to find the source of the infestation and once you do, spray it and you will have killed the bed bugs in no time. Don’t forget to disinfect the whole area because you don’t want any leftover eggs that will make you deal with the same problem a few weeks from now. If you are still having problems with bugs in your bed then it’s time for you to call a professional bed bug exterminator. You may have an extreme influx of bugs all over your room. An exterminator can handle this problem in minutes.

Before you use bed bugs insecticides, make sure you have done all pre-treatment procedures to make sure you won’t have to deal with bugs again, at least not anytime soon. If you cannot remove all clutter, reduce it if possible to make the inspection easier. You can also dismantle the bed so you can expose more bugs. Remove the gauze fabric under your box spring so you can inspect it thoroughly. Don’t forget to check under the fabric stapled to the frame in the box springs.

Since bugs do not like heat, wash infested garments and bed linen with hot water (120°F minimum). If you don’t want to wash them, you can just use a clothes dryer or a steamer to do the job. Heat is great for getting rid of bed bugs.

Aside from periodic vacuuming and steaming, the use of bed bugs insecticides can tremendously help in eliminating bugs in no time. Same with other procedures, there are some guidelines that you have to strictly follow to make sure you are not unnecessarily exposed to such substances and of course you want the treatment to be effective.

Read the label carefully before starting. Apply the product only when you fully understand the instructions. Never spray the insecticide to mattresses, bedding, linens or to any surface that would be in direct contact with a person unless the label specifically says so. Although most of the insecticides we have in the market nowadays are 100% non-toxic, it wouldn’t hurt if we will be extra cautious. Some products can be detrimental to both people and pets.

When using bed bugs insecticides, it’s very important to only use the needed amount. Anything in excess is not beneficial and this is applicable to both organic and inorganic solutions. Also, instead of spraying the entire room, get a really bright flashlight and target the nest. Look for adults, juniors, eggs and larvae.

After spraying and thoroughly dusting, you have to encase your mattress in a sealable cover, do this with your box spring as well. Don’t use plastic, use cloth instead. You can find bed bug encasements for bed bug prevention over the internet. Inspect the seal regularly for any holes or tears, seal the area with a permanent tape so kill trapped bags.

The Key to Bed Bug Removal

Looking to get rid of those horrible little creatures that come and get you in the night? Yeah – they really do exist – but you can find a pretty easy and effective way to get rid of them if you follow a few simple directions.

The first key to successful bed bug removal is understanding what they are and what bed bugs look like. Bed bugs are tiny little black creatures that are about the size of an apple seed. That’s how it will appear to you. They crawl all over the place and generally find you while you’re sleeping. Yes, all those stories that mommy told you about bed bugs biting was true!

The second thing is to understand why they come at you. To put it shortly, they want your blood, and they are willing to crawl long distances to get it. They won’t just take a little bit, they will take 3 times their body weight. And unfortunately, it normally won’t just be one bug. It’ll be a lot of them. So this can turn into a drastic probably extremely quickly if you aren’t careful!

How do they find you? You have to know how to prevent them from coming if you are serious about your bed bug removal. They find you primarily by the smell of carbon dioxide. Whenever you breath you emit carbon dioxide, and it acts as a beacon for bed bugs. So once they smell it they come right at you. They’ll come from all directions, whatever it takes, to get to you.

The key to removing them is simple. You have to control your area and keep it clean. Wash all of your clothes and sheets in very hot water, and keep things locked up in air tight containers. Then you should hire a bed bug exterminator to come, or get some bed bug spray or other bed bug killer product.

Spray the area once all of your things are stored safely away. Keep in mind, though, that the eggs could still be around – so you generally want to spray a few times per week for 2 weeks or so. That will make sure that you get all of them!

Once you do this the bed bug removal is pretty much a done deal, however, you have to understand just how crazy they can get. They can come from anywhere, including pipes, walls, even electrical outlets. They mean business.

Consider getting a bed bug mattress cover to help prevent bed bugs or keep them from returning.

If they simply won’t go away even after spraying then you should get something that’s more effective. Ultimately you want to get an expert to come into your house and do it for you. It’ll ensure that it’s done properly, and this really isn’t a problem that you want to fool around with. You can wake up some days with tons of bite marks on you.

Danger: Why Bed Bug Removal Is So Important

Imagine if hundreds of them come to you in the night and suck away three times their body weight? Do you know how much blood you will lose? You can literally lose your health to it and fall ill by the lack of blood. This is a very serious problem and should take some serious consideration. The bed bugs play dirty, so you should too!
